Candice Jacobs/ Nottingham
Candice Jacobs draws attention to location, context, social hierarchy and structure. Commenting on voyeurism and the interaction between artist and resident, ‘Berlin U-Bahn window display redrawn onto Gropiusstadt apartment window’, 2009, replicates a design taken from the U-Bahn trains that may be somewhat familiar to an immediate audience, and reproduces it onto the windows of the apartment at Gropiusstadt.
In ‘DVD still from work in progress’, 2010, Jacobs uses the ideas of artist Stephan Willats in the creation of a new video work. Willats is an artist whom also completed a residency at Gropiusstadt in the late 1970s and whose work responds to social housing projects. Willats comments on a connection that residents of these towered communities make with particular objects and their surroundings in order to expand their habitual dwelling and place ownership over the view from their window.
